I REALLY like wearing heels. If I could I would wear heels every day. Unfortunately my feet disagree and when I have to walk places, which I do A LOT, being a non driver, I need flat shoes.
Up until now I’ve always just bought cheap ballet flats, they’re handy as they squish really flat and I can often put them in my handbag on a night out to walk home in later. This is all well and good until yesterday I trod on a stick. It was a stick with a huge thorn on it and it went straight through the bottom of my shoe and into the ball of my foot leaving me hobbling in a rather unattractive manner.
Leaving aside the fact that this is highly inconvenient as I am going to a burlesque lesson on Saturday that requires heels (fingers crossed for a recovery by then please!) I can’t help but think that surely one of the main functions of a pair of shoes is that they protect your feet from things on the floor?
On this note I have decided that for Autumn I need to invest in a new pair of flat shoes. I want something relatively stylish, but also sturdy enough to withstand pesky twigs, bits of glass and anything else I might find on the street.
I have in my head that a pair of lace up brogues might be a nice way to go.
My criteria:
- Flat, or with a small, but sensible heel
- fairly low at the front as I have short legs and anything that comes up to my ankle will cut me off
- a rounded point toe
- Thorn proof
- £20 or under (see, it was such an easy list till we got to here….)
Starting by looking at vintage pairs these, from jamesrowlandshop on Etsy would be perfect, if they were only in my size. I love that the foot is slightly lower at the front, so less leg shortening and the cute, almond shaped toes.

Sizing will be a problem with vintage shoes and I’ve seen nothing else that compares, so I turn to new shoes.
I loved these from Faith, and they’re in the sale for £10. But…..

They only have a size 3 left. So if you’re a size 3 then grab a bargain while you can!
These Tribute Weave shoes from Office, with a small but sensible heel, are fantastic, but frankly if I could afford to spend £65 on shoes I probably wouldn’t be hobbling around like an idiot right now.

These lovelies from Topshop are £30, so more my price range, but I have to question whether in pay off for the price I’m going to lose thorn protection and I think they may be a bit high at the front. For these reasons I think a trip to the store to check them out is in order. Though I will bet they don’t have them in my (huge) local Topshop, just to spite me.

I haven’t shopped for shoes properly for years, getting them mostly from eBay, supermarkets or occasionally New Look, so I’m at a bit of a loss where to start, apart from the obvious
Where else can I find my perfect shoes?

I have ruling my foot world in repettos ballets for over a year now. I also found a pair by Bloch called “Stardust”. These are perfect.
Thanks for the tip! I shall go investigate…
