Style Icon – Carla Bruni-Sarkozy

Figaroscope (French newspaper Le Figaro’s entertainment supplement) has conducted a poll to find the most chic woman in Paris, and yesterday I read that Carla Bruni only came 5th.

All I can say is, well, there must be stiff competition in the world of chic Parisians. I’m sure being a Retro Chick Style Icon will go someway towards making it up to Carla, who is probably sobbing into her pain au chocolat as I type about her tiny 8.6% vote share. (I would add that personally I would be happy with 1% in such a poll, but you’d be hard pressed to find a Parisian that knew my name)

Her background is maybe slightly seedy, but very glamorous and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll. It includes an affair with Mick Jagger, modelling for Christian Dior, Givenchy, Christian Lacroix, Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Yves Saint-Laurent, Chanel and Versace, and a music career, that she is still pursuing . She is also involved in philanthropic work through the Carla Bruni Sarkozy Foundation aiming to bring cultural and artistic training to children in deprived areas and other excluded groups, as well as fighting against illiteracy.

Since becoming the French First Lady in 2008 her on duty style epitomises for me that sense of European chic. Smart and co ordinated, without ever looking contrived.

If I had a criticism it would be that her off duty wardrobe maybe looks a little bland. It’s classic; Jeans, T shirts and crisp white shirts; but not very imaginative.

She graciously makes it up to me, however, with her choices in floor sweeping evening wear.

There’s nothing challenging about her wardrobe. Nothing edgy. But for pure, classic, elegance she’s certainly worthy of joining the ranks of the Retro Chick Style Icons.
