A Smashing Day Out – The Chap Olympiad 2010

This weekend, as you may have heard me mention, was the weekend of the Chap Olympiad.

On Saturday 17th July the ranks of the fabulously dressed descended on Bedford Square Gardens in Bloomsbury with well stocked picnic baskets to view some sporting events for the athletically disinclined.

The Olympiad is in it’s 6th year, I believe, but this is the first time I’ve made it down to the big smoke to attend. I’m very glad I did. I actually took part in just one event, the martini relay, and quite frankly my team were robbed of a prize.

As the person who robbed us (by bribing the judge with a flash of stocking top no less) was the lovely Fleur De Guerre I had to forgive and forget. I am happy to confirm that Fleur is possibly even lovelier in person than she is on the interweb, if that’s even possible, and was happy to pose for photographs next to little ole’ me.

My outfit details:

❤ Dress & Handbag - Vintage from a Charity Shop ❤ Shoes - Clarks Originals ❤ Pearl Necklace - Antique shop ❤
❤ Pearl Earrings - eBay ❤ Gloves - Antique market ❤ Belt - Primark ❤

I spent a jolly afternoon quaffing cocktails, tea and eating yummy cakes, whilst enjoying such events as the bicycle umbrella jousting and Bounder slap. At some point after about 7pm (coincidentally about the point I moved on from cocktails to fizzy wine) the day descended into somewhat of a blur, the kind of blur where you wake up the next day and realise what a horribly loud and uncouth person you really are and hope everyone else was too drunk to notice (seriously, I shouldn’t drink wine, I just shouldn’t, what is the wine equivalent of a lager lout?)

Still, here’s some pretty pictures of cake anyway, and a man on a bike with an umbrella.

If you would like to see more photos of the event then they’re all on my Facebook page, and if you want to find out more about the Chap Olympiad and the Chap magazine then pop on over to thechap.net, I heartily recommend the magazine as an excellent read, well worth the subscription, even if you’re a Chapette!

  1. It was great to meet you yesterday and it’s fantastic to see photos of your Saturday shenanigans. That pic of you and Fleur is gorgeous. You both look lovely!

I’m rather stunned that someone in that second photo is wearing what appears to be a Nazi uniform though. I thought The Chap was more about good clean fun, or am I just over-reacting?

    • Yes, I remember discussing that with someone on the day.

I think her name was Heidi and she gave instructions on the games, and what you sadly can’t see is that she has no trousers on and is wearing fishnet tights under the table there.

It was all very tongue in cheek, but we did discuss whether that was appropriate.

  2. It looks like an amazing day, and you look fabulous :)

This is possibly weird of me, but I absolutely adore the dresses (tops?) the girls serving the tea are wearing in the second last picture. I’m guessing they’re supposed to be uniforms, but they’re gorgeous!

  3. SOOOO gutted I could not make it – although I dressed the part and was spotted by a 1920′s flapper at Waterloo station (she looked amazing in her white dress, tights and black shoes) and I spotted quite a few people dressed in their best sporting picnic hampers.
However – there is NEXT year!!! :) LOVING the dress btw. Tres bon!

  4. Loved this post!

Amber agree on what you pointed out, those tops are simply gorgeous, wish I could get one.

Gemma what a fantastic event, maybe next year I should jump on the Eurostar and make it there, especially if the weather is so great. As I told you on your facebook album, you look so gorgeous, seriously sexy-retro-kitten, my dear, great styling !!

  5. This was my first Olympiad, and I really enjoyed it – except for two things: the professional (?) photographers that just turned up in their jeans and t-shirts (come on, make an effort and try to blend in. At the same time, try not to get in everyones way: our view was blocked so many times by people standing infront of us to take photos) and the “comedian” Paul Foot (I think there were only a few people actually laughing at his jokes, most people around me were either ignoring him or heckling him!).
Can’t wait to go again next year – I want to compete now!
